Mumbai: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the first company in the country to secure a license for the cutting-edge steel slag road technology developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI).
The license allows AM/NS India to apply CSIR-CRRI’s scientifically proven process to produce processed steel slag aggregates at its flagship Hazira plant in Gujarat for use in road construction.
This breakthrough aligns with India’s ‘Waste to Wealth’ and net-zero goals by replacing natural aggregates with an industrial by-product, significantly reducing environmental degradation and conserving natural resources.

“We’re proud to receive India’s first license for steel slag valorization, which reaffirms our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President – Sales & Marketing, AM/NS India.
“Our successful track record includes building what is possibly the world’s first one-kilometre, six-lane road entirely from steel slag, recognized by both the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records.”
Developed under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the CSIR-CRRI steel slag road technology delivers superior durability and cost efficiency. Roads constructed using AM/NS Aakar – a specially engineered steel slag product – are 30–40% more economical and last up to three times longer than conventional roads.
Steel Slag Road Technology: Game-Changer for Infrastructure Sector
“This steel slag road technology is a game-changer for India’s infrastructure sector,” said Dr Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-CRRI and inventor of the technology.
“It transforms 19 million tonnes of annual steel slag waste into durable road infrastructure, ensuring long-term performance and environmental safety.”

Following its initial success, AM/NS India collaborated with CSIR-CRRI on the construction of India’s first ‘all steel slag road’ in Hazira, inaugurated by former Union Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh in 2022.
More recently, the world’s first coastal steel slag road was developed at a private port in Hazira, and another key road – NH-53 Diamond Bourse in Surat – also used AM/NS Aakar.
With steel production poised to reach 300 million tonnes annually by FY2030, steel slag generation is expected to surge to 60 million tonnes, creating an urgent need for sustainable solutions.
The Ministry of Steel, in collaboration with the Ministries of Science & Technology and Road Transport & Highways, is actively promoting the large-scale adoption of steel slag road technology to support India’s circular economy ambitions – estimated to unlock over $2 trillion in market value and 10 million new jobs by 2050.
